6 Ways to Spruce Up your Home this Fall

Home in the fall with leaves

Fall is one of the best times of year, especially in the Triangle. You might’ve been putting off some home improvement projects due to the summer heat, but with the weather cooling down, now is the time to finally get them done!

Here are some of our best tips for sprucing up your interior for the fall season.

The Exterior

Shovel digging dirt outdoors.

Clean your gutters

Clogged gutters are a pretty big problem, especially with all of that North Carolina pine straw. Before the leaves begin to fall, take some time to clean out your gutters. This is an easy DIY project, but be sure you have someone to spot you as you work on the ladder. It’s also a great time to inspect your roof for any lingering damage, as well!

Plan your spring garden

It may seem strange to begin thinking about your spring garden in the fall, but now is the best time to begin planting bulbs. Be sure to choose a spot in your yard that gets full sun, and in due time, you’ll have some gorgeous flowers! Daffodils, jonquils, and starflowers do particularly well in the North Carolina weather, and there are many varieties to choose from.

Declutter your patio

If you have an outdoor space that saw a lot of fun this summer, it might be time for some clean-up. Fall is the perfect time to hose down your outside furniture and get rid of any weeds or cracks in your patio. Although you might not be finished using this space, it’s a fantastic time to get some work done before putting everything away for winter.

Double-check windows and doors

Before it gets really cold, make sure your windows and doors are in tip-top shape. A simple once-over helps you determine if there are any broken seals or weatherstrips, which cause leaking and increased heating costs. Making these repairs in the autumn will save you more money in the long run, and you won’t be so chilly during the winter!

Perform a home safety check

During the beginning of every season, it’s a good idea to perform a home safety check to ensure that things are running smoothly. It’s also the perfect time to make sure the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are still working. Additionally, you’ll want to review any family safety plans and create an emergency preparedness kit if you don’t already have one.

Inspect your HVAC system

Your HVAC system probably saw a lot of use after a hot North Carolina summer! Make sure everything is in working order before the winter months by contacting a pro for a quick tune-up. You can also do a quick furnace check yourself and replace your filter if necessary.
