5 Helpful Staging Tips for Selling Your Home During the Holidays

There may only be two months left in the year, but with the rush of back-to-back holidays, the rest of 2019 is jam-packed with busyness—and if you’re selling your home during the holidays, you’ve got a full plate!

One helpful way to speed up your home sale? Turn up the appeal with strategic staging! The holiday season is ripe with opportunities for transforming your home into a cozy getaway—you just have to know how to strike the right balance.

Here are 5 holiday staging tips that’ll take your home to the next level, without going overboard.

Clean, Clean & Clean Some More

Cleaning isn’t specific to the holiday season, but it’s one of the most important steps in the staging process! After all, buyers will likely be examining your home with a fine-tooth comb, so while you may not notice those stubborn old stains or lingering pet odors, they definitely will.

And it’s not just vacuuming, scrubbing, and polishing every crack and corner—you should also do your best to clear out the clutter. Take down the family pictures, move out any crowded furniture, and make your space feel open and welcoming.

Perfect Your Palette

Before you pull out that red and green garland, take a minute to think about how it looks with the rest of your color scheme. If your living room walls are light blue or a shade of orange…then you risk a major color clash.

Luckily, you’ve got plenty of other options! Silver and gold, cranberry and hazel, purple and white—you might have to shake up your traditional decor, but it’s worth it to find what works best for your space.

Turn Up the Cozy

Although we may not get raging winter storms around the Triangle, temperatures get pretty low—so you have a great opportunity to make your home into a warm escape! Throw some hefty wool blankets over the furniture, start a crackling fire in the fireplace, and use lamps to bring light to the darker corners of your home.

Get all of the senses involved by lighting a seasonally scented candle (think: evergreen, gingerbread, cinnamon), baking fresh cookies, and leaving a pot of hot cider on the stove. Having a few treats to munch on during the tour will also help boost the buyers’ moods!

Keep It Neutral

If you’re selling your home during the holidays, then you get to have a little fun with infusing the holiday spirit into your space. But at the same time, you should be careful to avoid any holiday-specific decor. After all, you and your buyers may not share the same traditions, and it could turn them off of your home!

Don’t worry—you still have an abundance of neutral decor to work with, even if you can’t put out your usual furnishings. String some white lights around the stairwell, set out a bowl of scented pinecones, hang an evergreen wreath, and set a few mini nutcrackers on the mantel!

Don’t Overdo it

As you deck the halls and spread holly jolly cheer, make sure you don’t take it too far. An overabundance of decor can crowd your home, which makes your space seem both smaller and less welcoming.

If you opt for a tree, go with a miniature or tabletop version. If you have outdoor inflatables, leave them in the attic this year. And while your full size Christmas village is impressive, it probably isn’t the part of your home that buyers want to see. Be careful that your decor doesn’t cover up the highlights!
